Sebastião Coelho

Sebastião Coelho (1931-2002), born in Nova Lisboa (now called Huambo), created the programme Cruzeiro do Sul on Radio Clube do Huambo, broadcasted in umbundo and aimed at listeners of African origin. PIDE (the Portuguese political police) banned the programme. Sebastião Coelho also worked in Moçâmedes, where he started working professionally in 1951, and in Benguela he was the organiser of a conference in Huíla, as part of the 1st Angolan Radio Congress. After that, he moved to Luanda and presented, at Rádio Clube de Angola, the exclusively Angolan music programme Tondo ya Mu Kina ó Kizomba (February 1964). Later, he transferred to Rádio Ecclesia, where he already had the Café da Noite programme. These last two programmes were sponsored by Cuca beer. The opening phrase at the start of the Café da Noite programme was, "here we are talking, while we raise a cup of good and aromatic coffee. Coffee from Angola, Good Music in Good Company". Chronicler, reporter, announcer, producer and director, he was the author of the book Informação de Angola (1977), republished in Angola, História e Estórias da Informação (1999), and a phonographic producer (CDA).
