Sara Pinto Coelho

Sara Pinto Coelho (1913-1990) was a primary school teacher, first in Porto and Braga, and then in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), after moving there in 1945. Here, in addition to her profession of teacher, she also worked in radio drama, at Rádio Clube de Moçambique.

The Teatro na Sua Casa programme (Theatre in Your Home), at 9:00pm on Wednesdays, lasting an hour or more, was announced with a movement from The Planets by Gustav Holst. The announcer would state the title of the play, author, adaptor and performers. The show began in the 1950s, first directed by Reinaldo Ferreira, who was followed by Tomás Vieira and, from 1967 to 1972, by Sara Pinto Coelho. Sara Pinto Coelho, who had long belonged to Teatro na Sua Casa as a performer, was also the author of almost twenty plays written for radio and she also translated and adapted Shakespeare, Claudel, Maugham, Chekov, Gogol, Sastre and Wilde, among others. Among Portuguese authors, she found a balance between the authoritative Forjaz Trigueiros, Leitão de Barros and Joaquim Paço d'Arcos and the neo-realists Alves Redol, Sttau Monteiro and Bernardo Santareno.
