Rádio Ecclesia - Emissora Católica was one of the main stations broadcasting from a modern Luanda with a vibrant popular and musical culture. Rádio Ecclesia started up on 8 December 1954, with a 50 watt short wave transmitter, very few records and tiny facilities in rua de S. Paulo street. Regular daily broadcasts began a year and a half later, with Father José Maria Pereira as director. In the second half of the 1960s, the station's model was that of religious programmes and renting broadcasting hours to independent producers, similar to Rádio Renascença in Lisbon, allowing for great financial independence. In the commercial area, I highlight the programmes Luanda (by José Maria Pinto Almeida, 1962), Café da Noite(by Sebastião Coelho, 1963) and Equipa (by Carlos Brandão Lucas, who began working with the station in 1959).
