Father José Silveira de Ávila (1895-1977) is one of the most important figures of Portuguese radio. In the news clipping (Diário de Lisboa, 8 June 1939), we see him as a man linked to Portuguese Mocidade, an organisation within Estado Novo. However, it is his relationship with radio that I intend to argue here.
While the SNI was essential for the training of announcers in the 1940s and 1950s, Rádio Universidade (Radio University), an entity developed by the Mocidade Portuguesa immediately after the Second World War, was a fundamental part in the development of announcers, sound engineers and journalists who would reach their full potential before and, especially, after 1974. Without going any further, I cite the names of Adelino Gomes and José Nuno Martins.
Father José de Ávila was important in the training of these young people, with his rudimentary radio studio in Camões Secondary School, where he was a teacher of choral singing and religion and morals and also attracted enthusiasts for radio. The programmes written, edited and produced at the secondary school were then broadcast by Rádio Universidade.
